What's fair price for boring & head rebuild?
04 Jul 2020 07:00
I'm looking to get the barrels bored and head rebuild on 76 900 engine.
I consulted a mc shop that does in house machine work. I got a quote of $90/hole for boring and $250 the head without new guides. Sounds high to me.
Engine smokes constantly. True milage unknown.

Those prices are reasonable. Go look into full rebuilds of the KZ1000s etc...

Man I wish my KZ-1000 was that cheap. $600.00 for the head including all guides, seals and exhaust valves with surfacing. $400.00 plus to bore the cylinders. APE did the head on mine so make sure on the quality of the work. $250.00 seems pretty low.

APE is quite a bit cheaper for boring.

I have found a good rule of thumb is whatever the estimate is just double it. That way you won't be shocked when you get the final bill.

Cylinder boring here in Canada starts at $80/hole, the more passes required the price increases. A typical valve job (3-5 angle seat work/plunging) is $240 without guides. Porting varies depending on what you want, typical street porting starts around $400. Now that the dollar is in your favor again its not a bad deal.

At present, $80 Canadian is about $58.40 U.S., which is just a little more than APE charges if you do not buy pistons from them.
