Valve cover bolts
09 Jun 2020 06:06
Hi,
Can someone tell me what size bolts are used on the valve cover for 81 gpz550? Looking to replace all of them with new ones. Also, inspected the cam chain and noticed there was very little play, maybe quarter of an inch, without the cover on. Does this seem correct? i have a manual cam chain adjuster and have adjusted it to the point where the rattling noise goes away when running..however there is some wear on the the top cam chain guide which is why i'm worried. Thanks!

Just look in the Kawasaki Service Manual. Ed

The diagrams at Kawasaki.com & Partzilla will list the size of most fasteners.
Some wear or indentation on the slipper guides is normal. The service manual should have the specs & a drawing. The limit on the upper guide for my 81 KZ650 is 3.5mm. You could try to measure yours or compare it to EB pics. I've never tried to adjust the cam chain by ear, but I would follow the instructions for the manual tensioner, which usually say to back out the adjusting screw a little before tightening the locknut, so that the cam chain won't get stretched or so the rubber guides won't get ruined.

1981 KZ650-CSR.
I think this photo was taken right after removing the valve cover.
Here's a pic after turning the crankshaft. With an automatic tensioner you have to remove the cross-wedge before reinstalling the cover.
