KZ1000, can't shift from 1st to Neutral

I searched the forum trying to find something about this.

The bike is a 1979 KZ1000 LTD with a MKII stock engine. The bike runs great. I am able to shift through all the speeds easily. No unusual noises.

When cold when I come to a stop, I am able to go from 1st to Neutral while waiting on a red light.

After running the bike for a while, I can't get it to shift from 1st to Neutral if the bike is still running. If I turn the run switch off, I am able to shift from 1st to Neutral again very easily.

Makes me think it has something to do with a switch ?

Ever seen that before ?

Thanks.

Sounds like clutch needs adjustment.

Both clutch release action & lever free play change some with heat.

Adjust the clutch at the release mechanism at the countershaft cover and the handlebar lever free play according to Mama Kaw's service manual. Do it with the motor hot, and don't stress about changes in free play when cold.
