I'm sorry for such a late response, but a combination of what all is going on in the world and inclement weather have made it difficult to work on my bike. I found the title ad according to it, it's a 1979 Kawasaki 650SX. I took off the tank, but haven't been able to reproduce the smoking. Furthermore, one of the ends of the spark plug boots came off and since then I have been unable to check the voltage across the ignition coil since then. and advice on where to go from here?

Try again. There's no such thing as a 1979 Kawasaki 650SX motorcycle. Maybe a picture would help us identify the model. Ed

More evidence that the DMV does not hire the sharpest tacks. A 650SX is a jet ski. Conversely, an SX650 would be a Yamaha contemporary of the KZ series.

As long as the boot is already off, you might as well clip 1/8 to 1/4 inch off the end of the wire and reinstall the boot. Sometime corrosion will form at the junction of the wire core and the spike in the boot. This can cause resistance or possibly intermittent spark.

As mentioned earlier, I would pull the fuel tank and begin carefully looking for discolored or melted connectors and wires. If none can be found, then I think a multimeter will need to be brought in to start measuring resistance in the various circuits to determine where the smoke-causing gremlin lives.

No need to mess around with the carbs or tank. First thing is to get spark. Once you hve it, spray ether or fuel into the carb intake. If it fires with no weird noises, move on to the fuel system.

A great tool to have is the Lisle 19380 (or similar). Non invasive spark tester so you dont do damage messing with these old bikes.

Thank you for updating us. We really need to know the correct model identification so we can get you correct information. Can you post a picture of the white sticker on the steering head tube? I’d like to find you a wire diagram to help to trace through the electrical problems.
