Where to go for head work
03 Oct 2019 16:39
I am looking into building a 1075 motor and am wondering who you guys would recommend for porting. I am located in the VA about 30 miles outside DC. Is anyone aware of someone in my area as that would save me on shipping costs. If not then a good builder on the east coast would be great too. I would have loved to have sent the head to Mr. Cavanaugh but just read of his unfortunate passing (RIP) as reading his posts about these motors has taught me a ton. Thanks for the help.

According to a recent email I received from Joe Hooper, he has done his last porting job. That was the last I heard about it from him.

Wow how recent? He just ported my head a couple of months ago. That would suck.

Joe's response to my inquiry about head porting received August 26 follows:
"A mild port job is a very under rated thing.
You can get 15%-25% at a relatively low cost. And efficiency is increased across the entire operating range.
But you can only tell a difference at wide open throttle, so most people can’t tell.
Larry Cavanaugh does great port work.
I did my last porting job."
Sadly, I informed Joe of Larry C's passing.

Well that sucks. Joe was my go to guy for years. There is APE. Performance out of Rosamond California. I've used them but they are pricey.

what do you think APE would charge to just clean up a head using new seals and original valves?

Don't expect to get anything back from APE quickly either. My KZ-1000 head has been there 2 months now and still nothing.
