83 gpz1100 cam compatibility
23 Aug 2019 10:51
tearing down my 83 gpz1100 to replace cyls back to stock. when i pulled the cams, the wear pattern on the bearing shells tells me the exhaust cam is bent. (i always thought it sounded a bit noisy).
i'll be looking for a replacement and if the gpz cam is hard to find (or comes too dear), is it possible to go with a kz set as an alternative. would the f.i. computer balk at it? is it a direct replacement? anybody have info about this?

I did some measurements during my GPZ 1100 cam swap.
The GPZ1100 cams had a 28,25 - 28,30 mm base cycle (IN and EX cam). The Z1B IN cam had a 26,70 mm / the EX cam had a 27,45 mm base cycle.
So you need thicker shims if you want to run Z1 / KZ cams.

Re: 83 gpz1100 cam compatibility
24 Aug 2019 20:06the wear pattern on the bearing shells tells me the exhaust cam is bent.
i rigged up a crude v-block setup and found the runout on the intake cam was less than .001"- lookin good. ( max allowed is .004)
when i did the exhaust, i expected it to be out of tolerance, but max appears to be around .003". but i'm tired (didn't get my nap) and will do it again tomorrow.

.00325 it is, so i guess that's what new cam bearing shells look like after 500 miles with a slightly bent cam.
all the journals are within spec, too.
