Oil stem seals

Hi
On my KZ 440 ltd
Oil was leaking from my exhaust at the head
Noticed someone had wrecked a stud and major bodged it up but couldn’t tighten down.

I have replaced it with a helicoil and ordered new gaskets

How hard is it to replace oil stem seals
Can it be done with just the rocker cover off or is it full engine out job
Cheers
Scott

I'm not familiar with the 440 but I do know the seals can be changed on the other KZ bikes with dual overhead cams while the head is still on and the engine is in the frame. To do so requires some inventiveness since you need to make a tool and rig up pry points to depress the valves.

Also need to stop the valve dropping into the cylinder once the collets are taken out. Take the head off and do it properly.

A cotton rope fed into the cylinder can be used. See the tutorial I linked.

I know, but if it were my bike I'd change all the seals rather than just one so taking the head off would be simpler and would also allow checking valve seats and general bore condition etc.

If you put the Piston on TDC you can remove the valve springs and valve stem seals.
An other option is to put compressed air into the spark plug hole.

and i use the VW valve seal tools i have modified for the KZ heads.

I never have to pull any car or bike cylinder head for a valve stem seal change.

If someone is interest into the KZ650 donor head, it´s a free give away without the retainers and buckets.
