84 zx550 oil pan

Is the 84 zx550 oil pan aluminum?( Not near my bike right now) I have stripped drain plug from PO found a repair plug that gets welded in but before I order need to know what metal it is.

It's probably aluminum/aluminum-alloy.

Here's an alternative fix from the vulcan gadget fixit page >> Stripped oil plug! Not a problem! >> self-tapping oil drain plug by Oil-Tite.
His wasn't completely stripped, so it may not work in all applications. main vulcan fixit page >> vulcangadgets.com

I think it's aluminum but not sure The PO already repaired it once it has a 14m x 1.25 drain plug now so not sure if it can be retapped I haven't taken it off to check it yet. The weld in bung might work best.

Yeah there's a couple nice ones on eBay but of o can fix it for under $20 it would be better. Cause I'm looking at 50-60 on eBay. Bit that might be my best option. I have a perfect one from my 81kz550 engine but it's not set up for the oil cooler.

Okay. wasn't sure what total cost you were looking at, for getting it welded. I'd have to find a place & pay someone. I did see a couple of pans on EB for $40T.

Welding is free my brother can do it for me. That's why I was thinking that route but a new(used) pan might be better
