I’m changing out the instruments on my KZ750ltd H and I’m ditching the tach all together. Do I need to cap the tach port on the engine? If so where do I get such a cap?

I would cap the tach port to avoid grit and road gunge from blowing against the opening, and to help prevent leakage through the seal. Perhaps the knurled nut could be removed by cutting the cable, and then cut a round piece of leather or rubber or cork to fit inside the nut as a "gasket" when screwing the nut back in position without the cable.

There's an after-market tach drive cover plate available for the large Kaw fours, but I don't know about other models.

EDIT -- I just noticed that the Z1 listing information says:
Takes the place of OEM: 92087-5001- 92087-010.
Fits KZ550A/C/D- KZ650B/C/D/E/F/H- KZ750E/H- KZ900- KZ1000 (thru 80) - Z1. Eliminates the tach.

I don't know whether the tach drive shaft is still kept in place when using the block off plate. But retaining the tach drive shaft if possible is probably a good idea.

If not available, perhaps a cover plate could be fashioned.

Good Fortune! :)

Following what Patton said, if a round block-off plate isn't an option, I would install the knurled cable nut along with a ss washer & use a little high-temp rtv to plug the washer's hole. put the washer inside the nut, add a small dab of rtv, let it cure a few minutes, then install.

Theoretically, the tach spindle (pinion) should not leak even with the cable removed... but they all leak.

I always remove the pinion because it interferes with camshaft installation if you forget it's there. That can break a cam or strip the cam bearing bolt holes.

My buddy and I found a way to seal off the pinion port in the tach fitting. We used allumalloy to seal it off. Make sure the oring is in good shape and there should be no leak. :

I wish was home I would snap a picture, but removed the insert and cut it almost flush with the hex head, drilled, tapped and using red thread locker threaded in a short 8mm allen capped bolt. Works beautifully and no worries of epoxy getting into the engine or oil getting out!
