Ran across some old pics and decided to post them.
I normally use the Hi Flo's and will do a Fram every 3rd change because they have the rubber O-rings included.
These work on the Z1 900 too.

I found out after looking through my *.pdf manual, I had been installing the filter wrong for years. LOL It was assembled wrong when I got my first Kz1000, and not being one to verify every little thing, I reassembled it the same way it originally was. duh!

Wrong:

Right:

Much like the clutch plate orientation that daveo was so gracious to point out to me, I don't think it makes much difference, but yet there has to be reasoning behind the way it is assembled. Now that I sit here and look at the pics again, it would seem that the filter cover could restrict pump feed from the oil pan sump area.

Roller crank Z motors live on low-pressure oil flow volume more so than outright oil pressure that plain bearing cranks need to survive. The Fram filter looks to have much more area devoted to holes in the outer screen than the other two. That's more open area to flow more oil. Can't see the inner tubes of any of them but, more perforations (open area) in the inner tube will likewise flow more oil.

We've seen aftermarket filters with fewer than half as many holes as the Emgo as pictured. We avoid those. They just can't flow much volume.

Very interesting! Your "Right" configuration is correct for your KZ1000 but is the opposite of the KZ650 configuration. The first image below shows the KZ650 config with the fence on the bottom facing upward. The second and third images below show the KZ1000 config with the fence on the top facing downward. The KZ650 fence has many holes in it, so maybe they make a difference? Ed

Excellent point Ed. Perhaps my first one was assembled by someone that thought the fence went on the bottom like a 650, except it is not perforated? By putting it on the bottom with no perforations , it could possibly restrict sump oil. especially with hard running and oil levels not competently full during high revs. .

Not to let anyone think I might run the piss out of my bike.. It IS my therapy ya know.. I forget about all of those nasty things at the top of 1st gear as I roll on the coals. :woohoo: LOL

I've never seen a filter cover like that one on a Z1 or KZ1015. Did it come with the bike like that new?
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Non of the 903/1015 motors had them, just the later 'J' type motors (non kickstart ) and the 650 etc.

Why are they there?

i was a kawi dealer in the 80's and also had a personal 81 kz750e. the element fence was on the bottom and not perforated. servicing customer bikes i don't recall any being perforated (but it's been a while). what purpose does it serve, anyway? is it a splash shield?

Some Kz/Zn/Zr bikes have the cup on top and some have it on the bottom according to diagrams. Never could tell why the difference.
