Clutch adjustment
30 Dec 2018 05:59
In need of help.
I just put a 1984 gpz550 engine in my 81 kz550 everything is good to go but I can't get the clutch adjusted. I have a new cable and it's adjusted all the way out. The clutch isn't working. Can the actuator be adjusted?

How long has the motor been sitting ? The plates might be stuck . Sometimes you can just beat on it a bit and get them to loosen up . You might have to take it apart to loosen the plates up .

If the clutch plates are stuck together they sometimes can be freed by pulling in the clutch lever, putting the tranny in gear, and rocking the bike forward and backward. I had to do this every morning on my BSA because it had a competition clutch with aluminum plates. Ed

Thanks for the input. I didn't even think of them sticking. I was just checking to see if the clutch worked be fore starting it up. Hopefully that's the problem. It's been sitting for about 6 months or so. Still need to button something's up before firing it up.

Just to make sure you don't have two actuators...
You did not use the sprocket cover (left side of bike) from the 81 correct? That has the old clutch actuator, but that will not work on the 84 motor. The cover might fit, and can be used, but the actuator and pushrod should not be used.
The 84 motor has a different clutch actuator on the clutch cover, the right side of the bike.

No I used the 84 and had to get a new cable that goes with the 84. The engine was complete so it was swap out swap in didn't need to change anything from one engine to the other.
