New tach drive seal kit

12 Dec 2018 11:03 - 12 Dec 2018 11:04

Hello:

I am going to put in a new tach drive seal, o-ring and gasket to fix the leak on my 1978 KZ1000. I am wondering if the drive unit comes out easily or is there a trick to getting it out of the head? I will also be putting in a new cam cover gasket at the same time.

Your help and advice is appreciated.

cheers,
Ron.

It should come out easily but you may need to turn it several turns because the gear mates with a gear on the exhaust cam.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

The hardest part is likely to be getting the screw loose that holds the drive to the head. Recommend using an impact driver with a JIS bit that fits the screw head correctly.
Once the screw is out the drive will pull straight out of the head.
You might need to grasp it with pliers to move it initially. Careful to grasp it only on the smooth inner edges closest to the head to not damage the threads that the tach cable sleeve screws onto.
