Camshaft caps
15 Jul 2018 16:04
Hi.
I'm rebuilding a cylinder head from a Z750 twin and unfortunatly I've mixed up the camshaft caps with a set from another head. FSM states that they are machined with the head and therefore one should not use caps from a different head. Does anyone know if it's crucial that I use the caps that came with that particular head or if i'm in major trouble if I use the wrong ones? Thanks in advance.

This would be very difficult to sort the right camshaft caps.
Install the camshaft caps without the cam in the right numbered order and check for any sharp edges at the inner cam cap half shells mounting surface. Sometimes the machining/break-in surface/in and outside color will give you a solution to the right caps pairing!
Some pics would help.

If you install the wrong ones, the cams probably won't turn around.

You need to mount remove the valves from the head and then try the cam and caps.
This will make it easy to deduce which cap if any nips the cam..
And as Sirocco says . You should be able to see visual differences between the two sets of caps which should enable you to match up the correct sets.

As mentioned, the caps are line bored assembled on the head. If you mix up the caps your clearances will not be correct.
A little story on my experiences on line bored assemblies..
I fixed a motor in a car years ago that the rocket surgeon had used the main bearing caps out of a different motor because he thought they looked better than the caked / nasty original ones he removed from the block. He had taken the crank and bearings out of a junkyard motor, and used the junkyard main bearing caps. I think it might have run ~100 miles before it shucked the bearings into the pan. Luckily, being mr organized, the caps were laying on the ground (outside) where he originally "fixed" this motor. It was just a simple task of new used crank (again), new AZ bearings, and cleaning up the original parts that were line bored with the block. He did say he thought the motor did turn kinda hard. lol

Froze up a motor when my helper mixed up the rod bearing caps. I should have got a plastigage to be sure they were right.

I once bought two 550 motors cheap, and both heads were disassembled. He put all of the caps in one bag.
I was able to determine which caps went with what motor by trial and error by just feeling the mating surface of the caps. If there was a bump, I swapped them. When it was all done I did notice that one set of caps were slightly darker, maybe from oil additives, and they ended up all on the same engine.
Being numbered makes it a lot easier... 50/50 chance.
