I have an kz750 twin. It wasn’t turning over so I took off the valve cover. There was no tension in the chain, I pulled on it and the chain came off and showed a broken link. Looks like I have a lot of work ahead.

I was considering putting a new chain on it but that seems like quite a bit of work. Before I get too deep into this project I wanted to ask if there is a guide / checklist for other areas to look while I have the engine out of the bike.
I also don’t want to spend thousands of dollars to find out I skipped a step and I have a paperweight.

Ive been searching online and there are not many resources for the twin.

Any help would be appreciated

Sorry to hear of your misfortune.
No cost to tear it down and check motor over as long as you have a factory service manual.
Follow the steps. Keep all parts organized.
Check each over for damage.
Post lots of pictures for us to help.
Then make a shopping list of what needs to be done.

What is the history of the bike? Did you just buy it? If so the broken chain may have occured while riding and now there is carnage inside the engine including bent valves among other things. I think you are looking at a full engine teardown to fix the bike right.

Sorry to hear of your worst case scenario.
You have to pull the head first to check for bend valves. Later you have to split the engine case to renew the cam chain. Take of the oil pan first for cleaning and removing the broken cam chain parts.
Long story short, you have to remove the engine out of the frame for a better access to all parts.
A service manual is necessary for a beginner and engine a rebuild.
We will guide you to the rebuild process.

He bike wasnt running when I bought it. I thought it would be a carb issue. Once i got those off i saw the valves werent moving and now Im in my current predicament.
While i have the head and case off, are their gaskets or other parts that should be replaced. I would hate to do the work and skip a component

You can see all the various parts, including gaskets and seals, by looking at the parts fishe...www.partzilla.com/
I strongly advise toward OEM gaskets and seals where ever possible. Sometimes you can find good deals on OEM parts via ebay so you may want to check ebay once you find the part numbers you need. You should also get a real Kawasaki service manual. Not a clymers or Haynes. Money well spent.

Might check You Tube. Sometimes there are good vids on how to do something before going into it.

Maybe post your general location so we can keep a lookout for any possible used 750 twin motors available. They are not very common, but do come up once in awhile.

Well you can look at it this way, once you've gone through it, you'll have that certain satisfaction in knowing what's happening in between your legs. B)
THEN YOU CAN RIDE THE PISS OUT OF IT. :woohoo:

I’m in the Seattle area.
Is there a recommendation for an engine stand?
I watched an old school Kawasaki repair video-

Am I going to need to remove the transmission/ clutch to get to the crank?

I found the part number on partzilla, 92057, and checked eBay for the same part number. I found a few auctions selling that part number but it was listed for other models:
rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A...2Fitm%2F132242337451

www.partzilla.com/catalog/kawasaki/motor...afts-chain-tensioner

Any thoughts on that eBay auction

First download and read the manual before you buy any parts.
Pull the engine out of the frame, made a list of tools you need to do a engine overhaul.
Remove and disassemble the head and look for bent valves and/or piston dome damages.
Do small steps and post your progress and findings with some pics.
If the replacement parts list goes to long a replacement engine would be cheaper!!!!

Too bad this one is not closer to you. I think it's a twin. If it's a '77 it must be.
So they are out there.
