Split the cases? Oil seal
06 Nov 2017 09:29 - 06 Nov 2017 09:30
1982 kz440 Ltd belt.
I pulled the gear shift cover and there was 10lbs of crusted crap/oil slung on every surface.
It seems as if the oil seal behind the dri ve belt pulley is leaking.
Does anyone know how to replace this seal?
Can it be done from the outside without having to split the cases?
Thanks in advance!

NO experience with that model but most engine seals, that go to the outside of the case, can be pulled without major surgery. A thin screwdriver taking care not to scratch mating surfaces should do it. Looks like once you get the pulley and spacer off you should have access. Kinda like replacing a shift shaft seal.
Don't fix it until it's broken.

Unless they're in a cover you have to split the cases. They go in from the inside or are trapped in place.

It's not in a cover but I don't think you have to split the case, looking at engine prints it doesn't look like it is held in by a lip or shoulder. Also be out of character for normal kawasaki approach for that seal.

No lip on that seal, you should be able to just pull and replace like any other case oil seal. Always fun getting a 35 year old seal out.

Well the bike is currently torn completely down into bins and the frame is off being powdercoated. lol
So if theres a lip..... it wouldn't be the end of the world for me to split the cases.
Obviously I'd rather not have to do that though and it would be sweeeeeeeet if it could be replaced from the outside

Is there a tool that would be best suited to pry it out?
flat head screw driver? Dental pick? Skateboard bearing puller? Fish hook?

Flat screwdriver works if you're careful. They do make a tool that works pretty slick, you can see vids on youtube. It's fairly inexpensive but not something you need if you're just doing one seal.

Ya it seems as if the most expensive part of a rebuild is the 40 million new tools you need to buy for EVERY task hahaha.
I actually can't figure out how that thing works just by looking at it lol.
I'll prob follow your advice and use a flathead
