Adding an 81 650 kickstart to an 82 650?
25 Jun 2016 10:59 - 25 Jun 2016 11:00
I have currently in the bike and 82 engine which has electric start only. I have a spare 81 engine with kickstart. My question is, is there a simple way of adding the kickstart to the 82 without just swapping engines?
Thanks
Thanks

Adding a kick starter is a lot of work as I'm pretty sure you have to split the engine cases. It can be done, though.
If the 81 650 engine has a kick starter, then someone added it. or it's an earlier engine.
You can check the engine numbers at CycleChaos.com or at the jarlef z650 site.
USA models. I'm not sure about non-usa 650s.

Try searching for information. This topic came up recently and in the thread there was links to older threads with tons of info. The archives is a treasure trove of information, you just gotta look.
The forum search function sucks however. Best use google. Search "site:www.kzrider.com kick"

Yea i tried the site search, does suck. Thanks for the input. I've decided to go through this spare engine and repair it now and keep it the same instead of trying to add the kickstart to my current. I kinda just got handed the bike with spare everything pretty much just a year older. Got everything on bike currently pretty much running good now, figured to hell with it if it's not a simple switch I'll make my next project bringing all the spare stuff back to life and slapping it on something. I'll keep posted on it and with some pics soon.

Some Non Kick start KZ 650's were machned for kickstart but not installed. The only way to know is to take the clutch cover off and check for it. You'll need all the harware and the cover for the kicker, but it's all a bolt in then.
I don't have a plan and I'm sticken' to it! '77 KZ 650 / 750 GPz custom project in progress

I would verify what engine it is, just to make sure it isn't from an earlier 650.

Why go through all the trouble of installing a kick starter? These engines a very reliable, I removed the kick starter lever from mine in 1978 right after buying it new and have never saw a need for it. I have well over 150,000 miles on it and not once needed it.

Ha ......Did the same thing (only in 81) and have even been thinking as of late I would even remove the guts if I ever split the cases..... but then to each his own.
