Seals on KZ400-H1 LTD
24 Feb 2016 12:25 - 24 Feb 2016 12:27
I'm going to move this thread over here. I think my New Members thread has run its course.
My bike: 1979 KZ400-H1 LTD. Aprox 9,600 miles
Getting ready for summer riding season.
Did tune up procedure. Cam chain tension, valve adjustment, ignition timing and gap will have to be set when I put the covers back on. I adjusted the valve clearance to speck (.007-.009"). Put them closer to .007". They were small, more like .004". Did I just effectively de-tune, by using less cam, with more clearance? What is more likely, that the previous owner had small clearance to use more cam (more power), or is something wearing and reducing the clearance (valve seats)?
Would like to get some oil leaks sealed off before I install a new filter and fresh oil.
Removed the right side cover, and have a gasket for that. Had to cut a razor blade in half to scrape the gasket off the bottom near the frame. Did I tell you guys how much I love scraping 30 year old baked on gasket surfaces? :silly:
I need seals for the kick start, and the ignition timing shaft. Finding the seal for the kick start is easy, as they have it on Z1 Enterprises for my model. I am unsure about which seal for the ignition timing shaft. Part number would be helpful.
On the left side, the alternator cover gasket looks good, so no leaks there. Did that one last spring.
The shifter seal and/or the sprocket seal are leaking. Can I change these seals without pulling the motor? :pinch:
Thanks,
Randy

These guys are saying I can remove the shifter shaft seal and the output shaft seal without taking out the motor.

I still need the kick start seal and the ignition shaft seal. Preferably from Z1Enterprises.

I'm having a heck of time getting this shifter shaft seal out, and I've already mangled it pretty bad.
Can I remove the shifter shaft without messing anything up?
I already have both covers off, and removed the primary drive chain and sprockets. Looking at the shifter linkage now.
Thanks.

You're probably right. I have the Clymer. I've been avoiding splitting the cases, but like you said, it's probably what I should do.
I tracked down some videos of people replacing the return spring on the shifter shaft, so it looks like I can pull it out. The screws under the right cover are a PITA.
Thanks.

Been hunting for the kickstarter seal myself and had no real joy, any chance you have alink or part number or something? My 79 kz400 is leaking from the kickstart something fierce.
