Oil Seal Removal ( Tach Drive ) ???

20 Oct 2014 16:03

Purchased a New oil seal for the Tach Drive on my 77' KZ1000A. The FSM doesn't show how to change it out. Is there a trick on how to remove and replace it before I potentially bugger it up?
Is there a Gasket before the seal? Nothing appeared to be there before I removed the Tach Drive but the KZ Parts Lists shows one?

Should be two gaskets and one o-ring I believe. There was a thread with pics just a couple of days ago.

The discussion was about a 650, but I think the 1000 is the same

Doesn't say how to remove it? I'll probably use a Dental Pick and see if I can carefully remove it.

You should replace items 7, 8, and 10. If it still leaks after that replace item 9. Ed

Read the older Posts. Ed, I used a screw extractor bit to remove old seal. Didn't want to possibly scratch the inside of the tach drive if using a pick. Came out easy. Only ordered the Drive Seal from Z1 Ent. but it will be a while before I fire up the motor and possibly ride the bike to test.

I didn't see the paper seal sold individually thru Z1 Ent. Can try Partzilla at a later time if they have one? Or maybe I can make one? O-ring, I found a pretty close match out of my Nitrile O-ring kit that fit.

Interesting approach. Personally, I wouldn't go through the effort of replacing the seal without also replacing the gasket and o-ring considering they only cost $3.92. Considering that they are most likely more than 35 years old it seems like they may need it. Ed

#7 - Gasket = $1.63 www.partzilla.com/search/?q=92065-103&x=0&y=0

#10 - O-ring = $2.29 www.partzilla.com/search/?q=92055-1149&x=9&y=12

Certainly don't have the technical knowledge as you, but still have a few tricks up my sleeve for a backyard 60 year old tinkerer

I'll put those 2 parts on the running list when I get closer to breathing life back into her !

Is the red fibre washer the part y'all are referring to as the gasket? Check the thread I linked to for a photo. If that's it, as mentioned in my post, z1e does sell them but you have to call.

Z1enterprizes does sell the paper gasket. I ordered over the phone just as 74ullc stated . Some things at z1 I've found get left out on the Web in one search but turn up on another
or don't seem to be listed.

I've been told over the phone by Z1E employees to search by part number if I'm having trouble finding something. The gasket/fibre washer didn't show up using that method but they do have it.....give 'em a shout.
