Web 118 cam on a KZ 1000 K2 LTD?

Hi,
Was contemplating throwing a set of cams on my bike, since I'm changing out the suspension and upgrading a bunch of other things on it anyway.

I have read a bunch of old posts on the forum and think that maybe a set of Web 118 cams might be a nice little bump for the motor. Already have a Dynojet kit installed, ready and waiting and will be doing a custom exhaust as well.

Will my engine be conjusive to these cams? I don't want to have to change a ton of stuff in the head to run a set of cams, but I plan on doing some cleanup of the ports, new valve seals, adjust the shims, etc.....

Another idea I see is to use the GPZ cams from 83-84. Do these have to be from a 1000 or will a set from a 750 work?

Thoughts?

Well
I would say your money is better spent else where you should install new HD valve springs with any cam upgrade In my opinion money would be better spent making sure engine is in tip top shape.

I have a set of Web #110 in mine. It is streetable with idle around 1000 rpm. I had them shim on top no problem. Web wants them at .006 thousands for both exhaust and intake. Bike is still pulling hard over 10,000 rpm starts to drop off and dive over at 11,500 rpm

Im very happy with them. Your are looking at $450 for a new set of Webs.

A good set of GPZ cams should set you back about $200 as I have seen them sell for this. They are like .380 lift I think.......lots of numbers are out there and I personally don't know. At $200....that would save a few hundred ++++

don't buy used cams unless all lobes are mic'ed / measured and quoted with a money back G.

Make them do a little work for the money and you know a lobe didn't get wiped. Ive seen this happen to someone before.

GPZ also means no tach drive.

Thanks for the info. I actually was looking at some used 118 cams, but I hear what you say about the pitfalls associated with doing that.

Hmmm, don't really wanna drop $500 on a new set, if I was gonna do that I'd get a little more silly with the grind profile.

Might be a bit late with my answer, don't make the mistake of keeping the old valve springs (as DFIGPZ mentioned). No matter what they say on their web site there are not too many original springs out there in good condition. I have some speedway cams (don't know who made these, I got them free) and I would never go back to the original setup - smoother, better midrange all the way up to 10,500rpm before dropoff. I've had these for around 90,000kms and they still look new (unlike the "brand name" cams in my other bike).
Also 4theKZ1000 is correct buying second hand cams unseen is not a good idea.
First Permanent ride the Z1R since Dec1977 (220,000km) as of June 2015
Second permanent bike 1989 FJ1200 dyno'd 140RWH, great bike.
Third ride is now the Frankenstein 1981 GPZ1100B1, 1983 fully recon motor fitted LOVE THIS BIKE
Forth my work bike FJ1200 1989 (same type as FJ above)
