Whats the teeth on the sprockets look like? Are they worn? Could be worn sprockets. Chain and sprockets would need replacing as a set. Yours is a 630, z1enterprises has them as well as sprockets and chain for a 530 conversion if desired. Worn chain and sprockets on a motorcycle can be Very dangerous.
I've got the same bike, and run the 630 in a o-ring chain. 20K miles and looks brand new.

It's not the chain or sprockets. They are barely worn. It's coming from inside the case. It sounds like something slapping the inside of the case on the lower left side. Like metal on metal. I guess I'll pull the clutch basket next

Lower left side, clutch basket is on the right. Not the chain/ sprockets. Maybe either the Stator/ rotor, starter clutch. Or possible transmission out put bearing. If you pull the covers off of the left side looking for loose parts, if you don't see anything. Back off your chain tension and see if your Sprocket shaft is loose. The transmission cover comes off easily and you can look at the bearing. Or you can pull the oil pan pretty easy for inspection, probably needs cleaning from years of clutch gunk anyway.

I know you said noise on the left side, but noises in a motor can be deceiving. The first thing I would do is adjust the cam chain tensioner and see if it still does it. A loose cam chain usually makes the most noise on deceleration. If not that then I agree, check the clutch basket ( the weak link in a J motor ). While decelerating and hearing the noise, pull the clutch lever in and see if it stops or lessens.

sorry, i thought the clutch was on the left side but its not is it. LOL I pulled the case off and there is nothing loose that i can see or feel. ill try loosening the chain and check the sprocket shaft. and yes gpz1170 it does almost quit when pulling the clutch in.

If that's the case, pull the clutch basket, no splitting the cases on a J motor, and inspect the spring on the rear of the basket. If they are loose, that's probably the noise.

Well finally got to work on it some more. I took the big nut off the clutch basket trying to get it out. All that did was let me pull all the plates and steels out. The basket hits the case on the right side so there is no way to get it out. Scratched my head and put it back together. Moved around to the other side. Pulled the bolt out that hold the basket with the magnets in it. That won't come off either. Pressed on shaft? Back to square one. I guess my next step is checking the cam chain? I tried reading how to do it in the Manual but got a little confused. Guess ill reread it again.

I have the very same sound you do. It almost sounds like a fluid click. Mine happens in neutral when chopping the throttle however and I've narrowed it down to (in my head at least
a sprag starter clutch issue.
