Black powder in my motor
03 Jul 2006 09:45
I just picked up a 78-79 KZ1000. I removed the exhaust and have found a large amount of black dust, which I assume is carbon or oil burn build up. Is this correct? If so what do I have to do to fix it?
2012 Triumph Bonneville SE black
1978 KZ1000 B2 LTD
Fresh top end rebuild
Rebuilt head
Wiseco 1015 pistons
Dyna s
Green Dyna coils
Wired george mod
It is easier to say what I haven't replaced then what I have.
I must love this cruel mistress since she hates me

....must...not..do..a..Gris...must..not...light...match...must..do...Gort's...comman...
Sorry. Couldn't resist - the header made me do it...
You didn't mention how *much* dust "a large amount" - an ounce? A pound?
How many miles on the machine?
Sounds like it ran reallyreally rich for awhile, and may have exhaust valve issues.
While it isn't a "correct" condition for the motor, it isn't outright proof of a terminal flaw in its own right, short of some other specifics...

LOL, I didn't even think about the connotation that might give funny. Now that you mention it the carb settings were set quite rich when I got it, and my plugs showed that. I have yet to rebuild the carb (parts held up) so once that is done I will ride it hard for a bit. I did notice with the old carb settings and orig. oil at the decel I would get a puff of blue. It seems to be a strong motor (not as fast as I thought) but it is smooth on the take up.
