Winter makeover on 92 KZ1000p

Last year I bought my buddies 92 KZ1000p that he had been loaning to the department where I work. I tore into the bike and took all the police stuff off and sold it on craiglist. Little paint paint, added a rear passenger seat and sissy bar (for the wife), saddlebags and new 4 - 2 exhaust. Which all got me through the summer, but I wanted to do more and didn't want to take away from riding time. So this winter I have started on cleaning the bike up more.

Just finished pulling the wiring harness and rewiring the bike. It's amazing how much wire is left over from the original kz1000p wiring harness after direct power wiring in headlight and tail to come on with the key, wiring in a mini toggle for the blinkers, mini button for the starter and mini toggle for the kill switch. Just waiting for my new tach and speedometer to arrive and still have to drill and mount the mini switches in my new 16" ape hangers. But the wiring works, so I think the rewire is the hardest part of what all I think I want to do. Atleast I hope that is the hardest part.

Now that I have the new wiring harness ready to put a new covering on that I ordered (should be here in couple days). I am wanting to fix my oil leak from the cam end plugs.

I ordered new cam end plugs and valve cover gasket from Z1 Enterprises, which is on the way. After reading all the posts on replacing the cam end plugs and seeing where most of the guys recommend doing a valve clearance check, I am going to attempt checking the clearance and replacing shims as needed. Looks like I should be able to get this done.

I went with the more expensive cam plugs. Hope I made the right choice.

With this accomplished (hopefully) I will be working on painting the tank, fenders and side covers. Think I am going with a dark metalic red with sliver metalic flames. Going to do it all myself, so should be time consuming and interesting.

Doing something similar to this only flames will be solid silver

Thanks for all the great information you guys have posted on this site, really makes a difference when you don't have much experience and knowledge of doing it yourself.

Got a lot of work done so far. Here are a few pictures of what I have been working on. Hopefully with in the next 2 to 3 weeks I will have the finished photos ready to post.

Did away with a lot of the wiring for the police lights and stuff I felt that I didn't need.

At times I wondered if I had any idea what I was doing. My wife did too.

Wanted to add some height to my bars and may have went a little over board with the 16" apes.

Decided to change the color and add some ghost flames. Hopefully when I get in out in the sunlight the photos turn out better.

All in all, I made shim adjustments. Put in new cam end caps. Completely rewired the entire then. New bars, speedometer & tachometer. New coils, wires and plugs. And new paint job. Hope to have final photos up soon!

Hoping once the weather breaks to get some better photos of the KZ. But here is the finished product, until I get bored again and change something else. Hope you like it.

I know, not what most do with their KZs. I probably shouldn't have went with the 16s, 10s or 12s would have been a better choice. Maybe next year or if I get bored.

Nice work and enjoy riding it!!
I have a 1980 Kawasaki KZ750 Ltd. I bought new. I recently managed to get it out of my garage after 28 years and put it on the road again (2010). I feel like a kid all over again. Since I have acquired 3 78 KZ1000 Ltd, 1 1981 KZ1000 Ltd, and another 1980 KZ750 Ltd. Love the LTD's.

Well the oil leak from the Cam End Caps is fixed. I ordered new o-rings for the Oil Pressure Switch. I believe that is the only one I have left to fix. They should be in early next week.
