Stripped Shifter/Shaft

I took my 1976 KZ 900 out for a ride today and almost got back home and got stopped at a light and could not get the bike to down shift. I noticed that the shifter was not on the shifter shaft like it should. I pulled to the side of the road and pushed the shifter back onto the shaft and was able to get home. I found that either the shifter or the shaft that it connects to is stripped. Is there a easy fix for this ? Thanks in advance.

Most-likely a loose or striped shift lever, as the shaft is much harder than the lever. Make sure the shifter is tight, if still loose fitting I would suggest replacing it. You may be able to do a Temp repair to ride while the replacement part is shipped.

I had just tightened the shifter about 2 days before it loosened up again. I took the shifter back off the bike and took it to a motorcycle repair shop and they said that the shifter is good and it must be the shaft. I checked the shaft when I got back home and there is next to nothing on the shaft. Any idea where I can get a new one ?

For an emergency fix fully slacken the gear lever and with it in the correct position carefully tap in some small sewing needles between the splines.
Once you've got 5 or 6 equally spaced you can tighten the lever and snap the needles off flush.
Make sure that there is a gap in the levers clamp when the bolt is tightened so that the clamp is gripping the splines and not just closing up on itself.
If that is the case then open up the gap by running an hacksaw blade or thin file down it.
