Oil leaking from crankcase breather
17 Sep 2011 13:40
Hello all, I am at a loss, I recently revived a 79 kz650 D2 and the engine runs great no smoke lots of power. The problem is it runs all my oil out of the crank case breather. pods no air box, good compression. I open the round cover under the carbs and it is empty shouldn't there be some kind of pcv valve or something in there?

Welcome.
If you really are losing ALL the oil, then there is a MAJOR blow-by problem. Likely there are no piston rings and virtually no compression.
If there is enough oil coming out to make a large puddle, then the oil level may have been much too high, or there are problems with the rings- seriously stuck, broken, or incorrectly installed.
If it is just a fine mist, then there may be no problem. A pcv is not needed in this kind of system, but a crankcase filter is when there is no airbox.

The problem is that you have pods and no airbox so the tube that would normally run between the breather and airbox is not there. As a result, instead of the oil mist being drawn through the airbox into the carbs and then burned off, the oil mist is simply spitting out of the breather onto your engine. Some folks deal with this problem by putting a breather filter on the breather, others route a hose to a trashcan hidden near the rear fender so it catches the oil or they just route a hose down to the ground so they can mist their rear tire with the oil (this prolongs the like of the tire but may shorten the life of the rider). Of course you could just reinstall the airbox. Make sure you are not over filling the crankcase with oil as this makes the problem worse. Ed
