Output Shaft Seal - Sprocket how to remove
04 Sep 2011 14:10
Anyone know how to remove the output seal by the sprocket area on 81 KZ1000J? Any tricks to this? A buddy mention using a small screw to assist pulling it out, but the seal seems firmly entrenched.
Thanks!
Greg

Thanks Patton. This seal hardly has any thickness to it since it has a lip or inner groove. I don't think a screw will bite into it.

This link is better, but the method may not work with the particular seal in question.

Get a new seal, some masking tape and grease. Remove the countershaft(engine) sprocket, and then the "mission" (Transmission) cover. Put the tape over the splines and then lightly grease the tape so the new seal is not cut by the splines. Install the cover with the new seal.

If it's installed from the back side, then you'll have to take the trans cover off, as Mfolks says.
If it can be installed from the outside, then you could try to make the puller.

I don't know about the 1000, but on the 550, I think I recall it could go in from the front or the back, but I did it from the back. I had the whole cover off and replaced the clutch rod seal, and the shifter seal too.
The only thing is, if it can be installed from either side, then that means you can also accidently pound it through, so then the seal will be inside the cover. No big deal, but then the cover will probably have to come off to get it out.

Thanks guys. I ended up taking the cover off, then smacking it out from the inside. Really had to hit it to knock it out. At first, I didn't know there's a metal ring built inside the seal. I think I needed a new gasket on that cover anyhow. Does Kawi still have those gaskets I wonder?
Thanks for the help!

The new seal did not come with a seal spring. It's a superceded part number for the seal, but there's nothing showing the spring on the parts diagram. I don't think I should use the old spring since it's probably stretched out after 30 years. What the hell Kawasaki?
