1976 kz 400 gasket question
25 Jul 2011 18:07
I picked up a 1976 kz400 (d-model i believe) for $100 and tore it all apart and now have it all put back together but am confused about this rubber valve cover gasket.the one right above the intake boots, not the top one. the part that confuses me is that the rubber gasket i got for it in a set works well except for where the cam end caps go. the problem is there is no groove for the gaket o fit into on the head just under those caps that poke out at the ends of he cam.whats up with this?? i had 2 sets of gaskets and just cut the bottom of the rings off (the rubber rings at the end of the gasket where the caps go)since there is no groove for them to fit into. what is the propper way to install this gasket?? it doesnt want to smoosh together if i dont cut them off because there is no plce forthe rubber to go when i tighten the bolts.i just dont get why there isnt a place for it under the caps in the head. thank you

Sorry it took so long to reply to this- but if you're still wondering....
The original gasket had the cam plugs built into it. Kawasaki soon after issued
a service bulletin, which says to discard this gasket and use sealant (I like Yamabond)
to seal the cover to the head. The cam plugs are redesigned- they are separate pieces.
So you just use sealant on the cover and run a thin layer over the surfaces of the cam
plugs where they mate to the head and cover. The bulletin says to fill the groove of the
cover with sealant. I didn't do this- makes to much of a mess, and it's not necessary.
I just use a very very thin layer of yamabond on all the surfaces and torque to the factory
sequence and spec.

thank you for the reply. this makes sense because it looks like yamabond was used by the PO . i got gaskets off ebay but couldnt fit them with the cam plugs. so you suggest not filling the groove, but just yamabond the thin mating surface on either side of the groove with a very thin layer? thank you
