Battery Replacement

27 May 2011 23:22

Just bought this bike ('82 KZ440 LTD) from a guy who stored it outdoors in the winter without taking out the battery, and I need to replace it. My question is, why are all of the batteries I find "wet" (fill-your-own) batteries? Is there a good place to find a sealed, maintenance free battery for this bike? Basically I want a strong battery that will last me, without costing me too much. Any suggestions/links? I have found the battery to be the hardest part to search for - there is just so much out there about batteries, it's hard to sift through it all and find what you need.

There are sealed batteries available but I still use a wet cell. Better $ value IMHO. Unless you plan to flip the bike, wet cells are fine.

You have Battery Plus stores in your area.....

Batteries don't like the heat, been running mine over 2 years now in AZ.... Since I was designing a custom cage, I went with a slightly larger model @ 18AH rating... Not one problem as of yet. ;)

Obviously you'd need to find a physical size for your KZ but may help just the same....

Generally doesn't go hand-in-hand.

You should be paying over $75 for any decent battery that will last more than a few years.

Also, make sure your charging system, and grounds are all very good condition.

You gotta be careful with AGM batteries... they are way less tolerant to overcharging than lead-acid (wet bat.) batteries.

You could easily ruin your expensive agm battery with a old rectifier/generator that is not anymore withing specs.
AGM batteries do not tolerate overcharging. Overcharging dissociates the water in the electrolyte, which is unable to be replaced, leading to premature failure.
Wikipedia quote

At any time charging voltage should never be higher than 14.7 volts or your absorbed glass mat will start to break down. There is no way to add water that has been loss.

A lead-acid wet battery is more forgiving about bad charging... just add water :)

Hope this helps !

A standard wet cell also gives you more A-Hr and CCA for the money.... hence their continued existence.
