Its not the starter, its the starter clutch. Do as the kid says.

PS. Dont buy peoples broken shit off FLEAbay. Your just getting someone elses second hand headache. It always pays in the end to buy NEW.

B)

Now we know who won that big lottery jackpot!!

In the past week or two I've bought the following items off eBay:

GSXR750 throttle bodies
GSXR600 wiring harness
GSXR650/750/1000 sensors
ZX9 wheel spacers
ZX9 brake rotor
ZX9 brake caliper
ZX11 valve shims
ZX11 brake caliper
ZX14 stick coils
ZX14 Stick coil harness
And a couple other things.

I spent maybe a couple hundred dollars, and the new cost would probably be $2000 - $3000

All the above is for just one motorcycle. If I had to buy all new stuff I'd have to get rid of the motorcycles and find another hobby.

i get alot of stuff off ebay/fleebay.....i usally have great success...and yes a starter is something u might not want to get off ebay, i do agree with that. i got a front brake master cylinder off the same guy/same time as i needed one and the works perfectly..so...ill live and learn

so the repair kit from z1, are those parts to fit the starter?...i have taken the starter apart to see if i could find anything striped or slipping and all gears looked good to me.
so im just a lil confused as to where or what the starter clutch is and where its at.
i have the left cover off many times and the gear and chain look good on that side also....is that my starter clutch?
ill look at my manual also..

Thanx all!!

Starter clutch is mounted on the rear of the rotor/flywheel under the left engine cover. Take off the stater. Take off the left footpeg, shifter, sprocket cover, (all that is required to access the oil filter also), then remove the alternator cover. Remove the center bolt in the rotor/flywheel, then either use the rear axle and a big ol hammer to pop the rotor/flywheel off, or find another bolt/puller.

bgmrc, yes that is where they go.

Shim washer is on rotor side of sprocket hub, not between crankcase and sprocket.

It will leak less oil on the center stand vs the side stand.

If you get the bright idea to hit the starter to check the function before putting the stator cover back on, do yourself a favor and pull the spark plug wires first. If it catches and starts, it will throw oil from the spinnimg rotor everywhere.

Good luck

Also

the bolt holding the rotor/starter clutch on is left hand thread.

My experiance is without threadlocker you WILL be doing it again.
Indication is the starter spins fine but the rotor is spinning on the crankshaft taper (no key). It will kick start ok.

Good luck,
Jim

On my 750, the rear axle will thread into the end of the flywheel to pop it off the shaft. You won't believe the loud "crack" sound when it lets go.

A quick tip,, The "idler gear" which is the inner componant of the starter clutch "sprag" often develops "waves" on the face which the rollers engage. if there is any dicernable wear there, replace as well as rollers & springs (3 each). luck G . PS, In reading, your' stator bolt is discontinued. if in your' searches you see one, nab it..G

The left hand thread bolt threads into the end of the crankshaft and the flanged head holds the flywheel/rotor onto the taper on the crankshaft (click on picture to enlarge)

The larger diameter threads in the end of the flywheel/rotor are right hand and are the same size (at least on the 79 750 twin) as the rear axle.

The oil filter is under the finned cover at the top right.

The axle installed and one way of holding the flywheel/rotor for removal. Resists clockwise rotation.

When tightening the LH thread bolt, the end of the screwdriver goes to the bottom of the flywheel/rotor. Resists counter-clockwise rotation.

Good luck,
