I have an '84 SUB head and I can tell you it's not the best "street" head. You give up some street "versatile" midrange torque. But get the GPz up around 9K, and that engine really starts to haul the mail !!

I don't know about that, I have one on my bike that is flowed to the teeth and running .420 lift cam. I love mine. It runns like a Raped Ape. and YES I am useing BS34s on it.
The trick is to match the cams propperly. My cams are asimetrical and the exhaust cam is retarded. This gives me better lower rnd torque.

BINGO!
It's the RIGHT cams that make or break the deal.
Stock vs Stock, the situation is exactly like Polar describes it. GS is a mid range monster and the GPz likes to be twisted up..... Kawasaki's are like that, they love RPM.
Nice combos:
Push that GPz head from 83 to 95cfm. Swap out the GPz cams for something like Cam Motion Z1 and you'll transform the GPz into something that will put a smile on your face constantly.
Top it off with a rack of CRS33, RS34 or Pogue Machine taper bored throttle bodies with adjustable pressure regulator..... Can't go wrong with any of those choices.
You want "crap your pants" upper RPM pull & willing to sacrifice some lower midrange.... go with Web 109 grind.
I've seen 81GPz11 run 10.80s with porting and swapping out the EFI to 29 smoothbores. And that was without a bar or slick. Stock cams, pistons...only head and carbs.

Not 1100 related, but with my experience, top end power is limited with just bigger carbs(CV30 from TK27), and a +3mm bore kit(615) on my GPz550. Stock intake and exhaust valving, cams, RD Springs, APE Rebuild, and mild hand porting with combustion smoothing. Even with the 615 kit I've resulted in going from 27 to 36 ft lbs of torque. Next on the list is installing a set of Megacycle Cams(Stage 3), and degreeing them. I'm intake and exhaust breathing limited, so these cams will hopefully add to the top end, and gain even more midrange.
It all depends on where you want the power to come on.
Some day I'll have to 1/4 mile this bike. All stock, including airbox and exhaust, it will run 12.74 @ 104 mph, as my friend did this consistantly.
Carry on, this is good reading. I've subscribed!
