Hey all, Appreciate all the info. Larry, your absolutely right about "ignoring the plugs" since the bike sat for so long. Basically, you all convinced me that there was nothing wrong with the cam timing. I played this in my head a million times, but your opinions also helped, So, I started the bike, used what ever method was needed to keep it running, ie, choke, thottle, and after about 2 minutes of bitch'in and snort'in nasty-ness she cleaned up. A little carb tunning, and it idles nicely around 1000 right now. Tomorrow will take it for a little ride and see how that goes. I really appreciate the info about the Sudco carbs being built rich. I'll be looking for this as I get more miles on the bike. Right now, just ride and tune. Once I feel I have as good as possible, I'll replace the plugs and watch them every time I run. Damn, I'm excited !!! :woohoo:

BTW.... would the oil in the bike happen to be fresh Valvoline that had a minute or two running time on it?

Hey Larry, yes the bike really accelorates !! holy sh1t !! I know its been awhile since I've riden it, but WOW is it different !! the oil is 20-50 castrol. Your comment about the clutch basket churning it up was spot on. I guess I never check the sight glass immediately after running - usually before running.
So now I have the bike not really wanting to idle after start up, and then idling faster after riding a short bit. Plugs cleaned up very quickly - white as can be. Assuming i need to move the jet needle clip up 1 spot, but not sure about the idle thing.
Lastly, when I goose it pretty good I get a fast rattle like sound under the cam covers. Could that be too much shim clearance ?

Idle has to be set with engine fully warmed up. You can't accurately adjust idle mixture on cold engine.
We're going to need to know what jet sizes are in the the carbs.
Keihin calls the pilot jet...slow jet.
Pull carb tops, slide tab over, remove needles...get number off needles and count how many grooves from the top to where the E Clip is positioned.
If cam chain is adjusted properly.... lower the clip to the next groove for now to richen midrange a bit... Play it safe for now till you figure out if you have spark knock.
Plugs should be B8ES.

Hey Larry. here are the specs of the carbs.
Main jet, jet needle, are set to sudco spec, ie, 120 jet, YY8 needld with 7 clip positions, mine is on 4.
Slow jet is suppose to be a 60, but mine came with 62 for some reason.
I am using NGK B8's, but Cope Racing, and Web cams say to use B9's because they are one range colder. Is that for facing only ? I assumed so, and stuck with the B8's.
I need to put my vacuum gages on it, and make sure all the throttle valves are set right. Then I'll play with the air screws some more.
I check the cam chain, but it should be good since I just put it together. Possibly engine knock. After all said adjustments, I'll maybe try some octane booster and see if that cures it.
thanks again
