I removed the engine from the frame today and thought I'd share the newest batch of pictures. The further I go, the worse the case damage appears. I think that I'll take WG's advice and buy a new crankcase, crank, and pistons, and then rebuild the engine with my servicable parts. It'll be a heck of a project and I'll be sure to pester you guys frequently.

Out of curiousity though, will a KZ750 twin fit in the kz750 four frame?

Now for the carnage!

I'm all for a high body count and carnage in my movies, but that almost brings tears to my eyes. Big end let go? Ouch :(

Is there anything that is supposed to be touching the hole area? (if there wasnt a hole) Maybe you could fix the case with a little welding?

Man that is pretty bad...I feel like I need a hug and a beer after seeing that.
Best of luck to ya, hope all goes smooth with the rebuild.

take care, and remember...

I don't know if a 750 twin will fit the 4cyl frame but I have a good 650 engine plus 650 parts engine I'd swap for the twin

Plus the twin will hit the upper frame tubes (at least on a GPz750 frame), the 750 twin is taller than the 750 four.

Was the piston in parts at the bottom or all the way at the top wedged into the head?

Another motor would be the way to go I think.
At the minimum you are going to need pretty much everything except the head, and I suspect the head is damaged also.

The #1 piston is frozen at the top of the block and a chunk of the piston connecting rod is wedged in the crankcase between the crank and case.

I would love the challenge of rebuilding the engine with new parts, but considering that I'm a novice with engine work, I think I should reconsider. The bike is down to the frame now and I have a ton to do without building an entire engine from scratch.

I've done some research on KZRider and apparently members have had success with installing KZ1000 engines (I think some 900 ones too) into their KZ750 frame. The only issue seemed to be the tank clearance.

Fortunately, I have time with all of the other work that needs done. The forks need rebuilt, I want to paint the frame, the tank needs fixing, and the list goes on. It'll probably be a little while before I'm ready to install a new heart into my KZ.

I know sbjones is building a 650 with a 1000 motor, try sending him a pm to see what he did. (I think it just took custom front motor mounts, but it might be more)

It's a shame but all you can do is acquire another motor and start over. That bomb isn't worth salvaging. I bet even the transmission would look abused.
