piston ring replacement ......help
15 Dec 2009 17:03
So i have come to the conclusion that i got a ring out, but before i dive in both feet thought i should ask (keep in mind I've replaced the head gasket before so i am familiar with the process of removing that) how challenging is the bottom half gonna be to replace the bad ring? will it require any special tools.

Finding rings will be the hardest part.
If you come along the mother load, let me know.

Agreed. Despite the 650 rings being rare, if you are going through the trouble to do one set, then you should consider replacing all four sets. It is possible to replace rings without special tools (e.g. the ring compressor) but I have always found it easier to have an extra set of hands to aid in holding in the rings as you drop the jugs back onto the pistons. Others have said that one person can do this procedure w/out the compressor tool...I found that I'm not as good (or lucky) to be able to accomplish this...I have a very understanding wife who helps...in addition to bringing the occasional cold beer

Mcdroid has said it best. An extra set of hands is worth waiting for, and I think necessary.
Its really not difficult at all. Take old ones off, put new ones on in correct positions. Oil it all up good, slide block back on. Putting the block back is a little tricky, but just rocking the piston slightly will have it in, in no time. You don't need any special tools, just a friend/helper.
Replacing in complete sets is more natural of course, but if dollars don't permit, then I feel you man. It's all about ride time, not wrench time.
I like wreching, but i need to have one to ride at the same time.
Good luck.
