Do I need a cam chain tool?
17 Sep 2009 10:03
I'm getting ready to replace the valve seals, head gasket and some other things in my 1980 KZ750, and I'm wondering if I need to go out and buy a cam chain breaker/riveter tool like this one...

or is there a cheaper solution?

Trust me on this, you need to buy and read the Kawasaki Factory service manual before you start working on the engine. You don't even need to break the cam chain to do the work you describe, so why would you need such a tool? I wouldn't break and replace the chain unless you have checked it using the Kawasaki Factory service manual and found the chain to be stretched beyond the service limit (which is HIGHLY unlikely). Ed

Amen to 650ed...if you have the hy-vo cam chain, it is unlikely it needs to be replaced...and if it is a hy-vo and does need replacement (e.g. very stretched), then you need to split your cases and put in the chain endless
EDIT Whoops...is that a 750(4) or 750twin? One has a hy-vo, one doesn't...

My mistake...I was looking through the owner's manual and thought that I had to break the chain order to remove the camshafts. Oh, and it's the four cylinder.

those cam chains are endless. or no master link. you dont have to do anything with it unless you want to replace it. your suposed to split the cases and put the chain on the crank. but you can split them for replacment it you want to. but usuly no reason to do so. but if you take the cams out make sure when you put everything back together that the chain is not kinked on the crank. it will make things go bad quickley.
