Crankshaft Stamped with \"HW\"

17 Mar 2006 21:31
#32109
I noticed that all of the counterweights on my MKII crank have an "HW" (or an "MH" depending on how your looking at it) stamped in them. I had the crank gone over and welded many years ago, but I don't remember ever noticing these letters. Are these factory letters?
Thanks

I don't know what I was thinking not posting a picture. We love pictures! Here it is! :P

I also noticed this time that the letters are only stamped on the 2 and 3 cylinders, not all 4. The number 1 and 4 cylinders don't even have that same shape or area where these are stamped. Is that normal?

I pulled the pistons last Friday night, set them on a towel in the garage, and haven't been able to do anything since. This is sloooooooo going with 4 kids! Good thing I have the ZRX to ride (if it ever gets warm around here!) :)

Hey Shoe, what city are you from? I'm actually about 30 miles east of Cleveland in Painesville Township. We are right in the snow belt here. You are doing great already having 200 miles riding. I sold my snowmobile last year (like I said, 4 kids!), but I still have my snowmobile suit. I'm sure I'd be more than warm enough, but I hate getting that salt dust on my bike! It just kills me. I usually wait for a good rain before I ride, which doesn't always happen right away. I did have the zrx out a few weeks ago when we got into the 60's. Later!

Can't recall any of the crank guys that would go by those initials.

Well, I haven't been able to find any pictures or get any clues on what the "HW" means on my crankshaft. I'll have to try to get in touch with the previous owner
if I can find him. He was a friend of my brother's and bought the bike brand new in '79. I have owned it since '88, so I don't know if he'd remember anyway.

Anyone else have any ideas what it might mean??

some shops will scribe customers name or initials in internal parts to keep em from gettin mixed up with other peoples stuff. flexplate crank and rods in my olds have my initials on them. that may be it. really does not look like anything original, at least to me.
