Best Way to Cap the Tach Drive
13 May 2009 07:40
Wondering if anybody out there has a good idea for capping the tachometer drive when you aren't running a tach or speedo?
I'm on my 4th KZ650. First thing I do when I get them is put on drag bars, remove fenders, remove tach and speedo. I've always just put a rubber cap and hose clamp on it, but I've always got a little drip here and there.
There's got to be a better way and I'm sure the KZ community has the answer.

Perhaps something similar could be fashioned for other models.

how about using the threaded end, of the cable, and putting a washer and gasket inside it? a little atv sealant wouldnt hurt either.

I've tried that before and it didn't work too well. I'll try it again though. It sounds that the best/cheapest option.

Where the tach drive is properly installed with good external o-ring (between housing and engine) and good internal seal around geared drive shaft, it should not leak at all, even without the tach cable attached.
With engine running, should just see the slotted end of the shaft spinning around with no oil leakage whatever.
Stopping the leakage by packing the cable attachment cap (with o-ring, gasket, sealant, etc.) actually allows the same leaking oil to go up into the cable instead of seeping out from the cap area, treats the symptom but isn't the cure. At least that's the situation with the large fours.
Good Luck!

in keeping with "make what i can,and save the rest" i turned some aluminum down in my lathe and left a buttonhead on it and cut an o-ring groove in it slipped it in the head and used the stock locator, lock and screw and tightend it down.no leaks.

Take the old screw on adapter from the tach line.
Fill the inside edge with sealer.
Drop in a 5 cent piece.
Add more sealer.
Screw down tight to head.
Cheers.

I use the APE tach block off for the 1000 in my 650/810 and it works great. I had the same seeping oil and this was the magic!
