KZ1000 rpm at speed?
09 May 2009 15:17
I have a '79 kz1000. Finally switched back to stock 33 tooth gear in back, down from 35. I'm wondering if anyone could tell me what my RPMs should be at cruising speed on freeway (75 or so mph)? Just seems a bit high yet- right now at about 4500 @ 65/70 mph. Any thoughts?

Doesn't sound high to me. My 750 twin spins 5000 @ 70mph with stock gears.

Thanks guys, I guess what I'm really asking is: Can I cruise for extended periods at 80-90mph if that puts me at 6000-6500rpm?

Yes, assuming the engine is in good shape, that shouldn't be a problem. Years ago, I read that an engine is usually built to run continuously at it's peak torque rpm without placing undue stress on the internals. How close to peak torque would 6500 rpm fall?
According to this site, it will probably be near peak torque:

If yours is not an LTD, then it might be slightly different.

Thanks everyone. I realized that the prev. owner of my bike had also put a 14T sprocket in front instead of the stock 15T. I'm changing that out today, will see how it goes. Hopefully that will put me somewhere around 5500- 6000RPM at around 85mph. Should be okay for cruisin the freeway?

14 41 gearing is what i use on my little drag bike it is good for around 125 mph top speed but if you run that gearing on the street it will be very buzzy and not super comfortable to ride i prefer 15 33 or 35 on the street my self.
