I use one of those little brass wire brushes on a Dremel at low to medium speed, do "NOT" run one at high speed or you will be picking brass wires out of your skin for two weeks (need I say how I know that?).

Eye protection required of course :)

I suggest you go to the Walmart and pick up a fine steel wire wheel that fits on your drill. You can clean away and not hurt the combustion chamber. I wouldn't hold the wheel for long periods on the valve seats nor any power tool; even a Dremel with a brass brush on the seats. The carbon you have is fairly normal.

a good blast with carb cleaner will get a lot of the light stuff off first, then go after it with a soft wire wheel, be easy, a wire wheel can eat alum

Use a wire wheel like George said. If you keep blasting it with carb cleaner it comes off much faster. When the wheel's bristles start to bend in one direction, reverse the drill's direction.
