Many of the leading tool supply companies have precision ground steel rod in three foot lengths in metric sizes. Most call it drill rod.

You can get a 17 mm diameter piece for about $23.00.

This is what you use to check it the crank is in index. If it will fit thru all four rods, the crank is OK. If the crank is twisted out of index, the rod will ususllu go thru three rods, but not the last one.

Well, I liked this idea so much, I bought a 17mm rod from McMaster-Carr for $15.65. The problem is I can't even get it through ONE rod!! My wrist pins and the rod measure 16.98mm, so what on earth am I doing wrong? Do I need a wrist pin installation tool or something?? I though it would be a quick and easy check.:(

Bevel the end of the drill rod, it will make it a lot easier.

It's worth the $200 or so to have it welded and get the plate. If you really want to go crazy you can have the tranny gears cut. That way when you get bored with it you can bore it out and get bigger cams and not have to worry about the bottom end.

That was the first thing I tried last night...no luck:angry:

Should the piston pins push through the rods by hand?

Absolutely! Without force of any kind.

With the rod I purchased a few years ago, I had to use some fine wet & dry paper on the outside to reduce the diameter very slightly - you want it snug, but not tight.
