I just bought a 1979 kz650SR for $500. It runs and rides great. It has a custom 4 to 1 exhaust and pod filters but is stock other than that and carba were recently rebuilt, did I get a good deal?

Yes, without seeing it...you got a good deal...a great deal would have been the motorcycle with the stock exhaust and the airbox :)

Left side is in good shape along with the cross over. Right side is really in need of more than help. Left side will clean up very well with some 0000 steel wool. Won't cost you anything other than shipping. Lemme know
