You'll love the bike -- Living The Dream!
Besides what others have already pointed out, I believe that the points cover isn't stock, and likely is from a later model.
Here's what the stock points cover looks like:
And btw, the stock 26 mm Mikuni manual slide carbs are very user-friendly. They were produced before the EPA restrictions became effective, and were not excessively lean from the factory. Also, these particular carbs accommodate pods better than most others, but do indeed perform best throughout the entire range of throttle positions from idle to wide open when using the stock air box.
If the stock air box is too difficult or too expensive to obtain, the Z1 air box (available at Z1E) may be fitted instead.
Wiredgeorge does this himself and endorses such use.
Good Fortune!

Thankyou Patton. I may go with a z1 air box. And, thank you for the article. I am changing the bars an tank not only for cosmetics, but for the reasons the editor listed in that write up as well.

The LTD tank provides 120 miles before switching to reserve, which is about 2 hours continuous riding, after which I usually welcome a stop for gas and stretch, etc.

Ok…..so I just spoke with Jeff @ Z1 and he has advised me of the following:
The best replacement for my airbox, is the original.
The next best would be any KZ900 Box
The third best would be any box from 76-80 (non shaft drive)
And the last option should be the pods
The z1 airbox will work but modifications will need to be made
So, I have to ask, does anyone have an airbox or know anyone that has one from 76-80? Please let me know if so.
As for the tank, this just looks better (see attached) and you can go farther.....especially with my problem. I have TWS. (Throttle Wrist Syndrome).....the more gas the better

FWIW, here's one of numerous posts by wiredgeorge where he addresses using a Z1 air box on various other KZ models.
wiredgeorge wrote: . . . I LIKE using a Z1 airbox with a K&N filter on any of my bikes. There is TONS of room on both the LTD and A model for 76 (battery removes differently). The airbox fits back towards the battery and is supported by the front battery cross brace so you don't have to tie it up to support it. It also doesn't touch or contact the the 76 side covers. . . I prefer 26s on my personal ride (KZ1000E1) which now has a Z1 airbox and K&N filter. . . the K&N drop in flows no better than the paper drop in in the Z1 airbox btw.... not as far as I can tell.

You can try sealing it like JD did or you can replace it (Z1Enterprises carries it). I would also polish the stator cover since you will have it off. Some 1000 grit sand papper, one cutting and one polishing buffing compounds, polishing wheel on a drill or a bench polishing wheel would do the trick. That is a whole other topic on best way to do it though. You see, one thing leads to another, LOL.

Thanks for remembering that one Joe.

The tread was over 2 years old and I probably have another 16,000+ on her and it is still not leaking

If you run a Z1 airbox make sure you put plastic over the top before you wash your bike. Not sure about the KZ design.
