Someone school me on the KZPs!
07 May 2015 10:00
Hey Gang, I decided my next bike is going to be a KZP. What do I need to know?
If it helps any, I am selling my Honda Interceptor to make room.

Thanks for your help,
I guess I need to know what to look out for, problem areas, mileage considerations, values, etc.
The ones I have seen ($2,000 -$3,000) have mileage anywhere from 22K to 107K.

You're right- Most KZPs for sale have a lot of miles on them - I read somewhere that the police depts. used to do a valve job at around 30K miles so I 've always considered that. The last few years 2002-2005 ( I believe) had dual piston calipers front and rear which I like. The motors changed from 1015s to 998(J models) in 1981 but parts are available for both. I love the riding position with the floorboards and fairing but others like to strip them down. Also with the J motor change came CV carbs that some like and some hate. All in all I think they're great bikes stock or modified and if you look for a while you can find a clean one for reasonable money. Good luck to you ! Scott

I like the fact they beefed up the frame among other things.

Bought mine for $1250 and 50k on it. Electrical started having the fits so new starter, rectifier, starter solenoid, battery with new cables. Ran for awhile better. Within a month the top end and carbs had to be rebuilt. The cylinder walls were so scored from sitting and moisture I ended up going to 1075 with new Wiseco everythings. Replaced most of the body wirk with fiberglass fenders from Airtech. Pretty basic but I can tell you it flys! Good therapy as well.
