Late 70's KZ 1000
10 Jun 2013 14:11
Hello, hope I'm not beating a dead horse but I have some questions about a KZ 1000 I was offered. It's a late 70's, green, flat seat, flat tank, big windjammer. It's chain driven with disc front, rear drum, and mag wheels. He thinks it had spokes when his brother bought it new. It is showing 15,000 miles and has not been started in at least 5 years. Asking price is $600.00. Other than maybe the wheels and windjammer it's all stock. Can the windjammer be removed. Is there I should look for. Is it worth what he is asking. It's in good shape. Don't think it's ever been laid down. Tires are dry rotted. And a ton of dust. Any advice would sure be appreciated. Thank you....James

That's a good price if there is no engine work needed
It will probably cost you another 1000.00 to 1200 bucks to get it running right and safe if you do all the work your self, but you will have a bike that will ride better then when it was new IMO
Note; not including new paint or shiny stuff.

Buy it now before it gets away!! Take 5 Hundred dollar bills and offer that. Or pay the $600.
#1 if your lucky it is an early year production 77 KZ1000, they had a drum rear brake.
Then They might be Lester Mags! which alot of guys did back then. They are $$$ now!
#2 when a bike has that big old ugly winjammer on it, I bought one once. It blocked all the sun ultra violet rays that faded all the controls and dash. These might be in real nice shape.
#3 don't hesitate, just buy it. You can always re-sell it for more to the next Guy if you can't handle the project

Sounds suspiciously like a KZ900A4/5 model with aftermarket wheels (maybe Lesters, dare I hope?). If so, then it is easily worth US$600 and could be quickly flipped for a serious profit, or if you wish to pour what bluej58 suggests (good estimate, BTW) into the motorcycle, then you'd have a nice motorcycle. Pictures always help us arm-chair referees.

Thank you so much for all the advice. If he still has it I am going to look at it again this Saturday. Anything specific to look for. And I will get some pics everyone. Funny thing, the owner is a great guy but if you knew him you would think a Schwinn Orange Peeler would be to hot for him. To see that he owns a 1000 Kaw just blew me away. From what he says it has spent most of its life in the garage. His brother bought it new, so he is the second owner. I will get the year and mfg date, anything else I can get. Again thank you for all the help......jimmy
