The old kzs were air ,the new ones aren't.
The old kzs were good looking bikes,the new ones are not.

in the z1 community it generally accepted that the original design stopped in 83/84 when bikes were made watercooled i believe they became more complicated in other ways too,but not being a mechanic i cant go into detail. i know for me the original z1 stopped at the m11, the j model came after and i believe was more complicated a set up. my 2c

most modern bikes are water pumpers besides the cruisers some cb's and katana's of a certain variety. I cant do that much research and retain it all.

When you can buy a new street bike that can run 9:30s in the quarter, right off the showroom floor, it's pretty obvious that if you want to run with the big dogs, you gotta run liquid cooled.

Regarding Performance/technology, well really isn't a comparison. New designs blow the old school away. Sorry but true.
