The most interesting engine evolution yet
19 Feb 2013 23:44
/Drive on youtube has been doing a series from inside the Koenigsegg factory for the past few months. This is the most interesting one yet, air controlled valves. No more camshafts, cam chains, etc. Electronically individually adjustable valve timing. Crazy.

That is pretty cool. I wonder what safeguards are built in just in case you lose air pressure while the engine is running; maybe the valves automatically close to avoid piston/valve contact? Ed

Not sure, I suspect from the way he was describing them that maybe they'll operate on a spring similar to current valve springs so the default position will be closed.

Something similar has already been done by an ordinary person. I used to belong to a Supra forum and a guy had retrofitted electronic solenoids to control the valves on a mk3 Supra. He had a turbo inline 6 revving to 18k I believe

Formula One cars have been doing that for a while now. Have you seen the videos of the F1 cars playing National Anthems from various countries? Just search youtube for Renault music
