Patch it long enough to get you to the shop to buy a new tire! It's just not a good idea. The cons far out weigh the pros on this one..

I'm with ed and boost...I only hear of bad things happening when patching tires. The only thing they say is worse, is using fix-a-flat!

Hmmm, price of new tire vs spending all afternoon in the emergency room getting the asphalt scrubbed out of the roadrash on your arms.

tubed tire/tubeless tire? how big is the hole?
if its a tubed tire just replace the tube,if its a tubeless tire and you can find someone who actually knows how to properly patch it i wouldnt have a problem with it if you werent racing it.
the problem is finding someone who can actually patch it right,i definately would not plug a bike tire other than to get it to a shop to get it fixed properly.

Re: opinions on patching a tire.

I agree with everyone. When I bought my bike, the PO said he would put some tires on it for me, since they both had gashes in them. He dropped it off, and the tires looked brand new! They even still had the little nubs on them. So I rode for about 2 weeks just fine. I mean 2 weeks of highway driving. I probably put about 1,000 miles on it. Then one day as I was going to work, I made it about 2 blocks from my house and it felt real splashy in the rear end. I looked back to see it completely flat. It was only 2 blocks, so I hobbled home and found out that he did not put on new tires, he used 2 plugs to fix the 1" gash in the tire. The thing deflated so fast... If I were doing highway speeds, I would've been either seriously hurt or dead.
The guys in the shops, and all the guys on here, are trying to help you save your life. My 2 cents, I'd listen.
