Is it worth it?
29 May 2011 10:37
Hey guys, bought a 1977 kz 650 from a friend for 600.00. I have since put about 500.00 into it and I have a few more things to do to it. Both of my side covers came off while I was ridind and it smokes a little. Just wondering if it's worth putting more money into it, or should I count my losses and sell it? I have always wanted a vintage bike and I enjoy working on them but I haven't got much time to work on anything.

My opinion? (And that's what you're going to get with that question) If you have to ask, you are on the fence but are leaning one way or the other. Or, you may think it's worth it but not have the time or money to do it the way you want.
It's really up to you - you'll never make your money back on bikes like these so it is entirely for your enjoyment. You'll have to make the call. I'm over $4k into my $1500 (max) bike. And I'm still eying up what I want to do next.

Make sure you use adhesion promoter when you paint the side covers

Agreed. New grommets are the way to go.

From a money standpoint, it's not worth it at all. You'll never save enough gas to make it pay even though it feels good to save a little. These bikes are, for the most part, a labor of love. A hobby, if you will. At least that's how I justify having them.

No. My KZ650-C1 has over 50k miles and has never had the head pulled much less any other engine work, and there are some KZ650s with well over 100k miles. Just keep fresh oil in it; don't be afraid to run it hard, but NOT past redline. Ed

Compared to buying a new bike and paying x, then selling it for x - $1000 (per year you own it)
Yeah it's worth it.
Not only that, but you will gain knowledge and understanding of how your machine works. It's a great hobby, is expensive at times but the sense of satisfaction you will get out of it after you fix this or that is worth it IMO.
