1978 kawi kz 750, twin?
07 May 2011 22:43
I'm totally happy with my 81 csr 1000 but after the weirdest thing happened to me today I'm wondering about picking up a kz750. I passed this guy going opposite directions today and the next thing you know the guys riding next to me flagging me down. I thought he noticed somethiing wrong with my bike or something. Then I realize he's saying "i passed you and noticed the kawi, you know anyone interested buying a kz750?" I'm like hell yeah! where's it at? we ride two block and he shows me a sweet 78 kz750. he says the bike hasn't been started in three months. it fired right up and purred, no smoke. extra two up seat, and a windscreen, 25k. the paint is not original though. The bike has been maintained to the max. new air filter, chain, sprokets, kerker header, dunlop tires. I wondering what you guys would expect to pay for a bike like that?

Probably $800.00 to $1000.00. If the intake and exhausts have been altered, I'd be looking at the plugs to see if you're buying a bike or a project.

well the thing is pretty sweet. the exhaust has been altered, it has a 2 into 1, supposedly a kerker. it has a new air filter as well, original air box in great shape. it was obvious that this thing hadn't been started in months and it fired right up. he only choked it for prob 10 seconds and it idled strong and sounded sweet as well. it sucks kawi couldn't get the hp's out of these 2 cylinders cause it sounds so cool, way better than a sloppy v-twin.
I haven't bought it yet. I'll be on my way to buy it tmrw afternoon. I've already gotten all kinds of offers on the bike before I even have it. personally with the lack of any KZ's available and the high demand for them in central new york I think I might just try to squeeze some more cash out of it than $1000. I think I might put it up for 1400 and if I get withing a couple hundred of that I can't go wrong.
So am I wrong that the market is really strong right now for these old kawi's?

The twins never had the draw the 4 cylinder bikes do. I own a small 440 twin, I have riden the bigger 650 twin. They are very differnt from the 4's. Good torque, but they can still rev pretty well. Counterballancing makes them fairly smooth motors they humm right along at highway speeds.
Some parts for the bigger twins are very hard to find, they are a pretty solid bike but the starter clutch is undersized and casues problems. I agree that checking the plugs would be a smart idea. Also they run an odd sized valve shim.

If I knew what I was doing all the time life wouldn't be any fun.
