How many miles when you switch to reserve?

My bike's a '97 KZ 1000P and I have to switch to reserve at about 95 -100 mile on a fill up. But then I top off the tank and it only takes a bout 2.5 gallons. With the tank holding around 4 gallons do I still have a gallon and a half when I switch to reserve? It seems a bit much to me.

Sounds excessively early.

I would take the gas tank off and clean out the area around the petcock to ensure it's not getting plugged with rust/sediment causing premature reserve.

As for how many miles, that depends greatly on your gas mileage (of course).

Some trim down the fuel pipe on the petcock inlet, remove from tank and look how tall it is. Me I ride on RES all the time, keeping track of miles traveled and where the gauge is registering. You should be in the 40-45 MPG range with stock bike and gearing, so 4 gallons should go 160 miles on the open road. I've gone 183 on my 1000 LTD with a 1 tooth larger counter-shaft sprocket, 16 as apposed to 15, 630 chain. But that gauge was bottomed for quite awhile,

It starts to sputter around 80-90 miles and then reserve gets me to about 110 or so empty (found that out the hard way once).

I may have to try it again while taking extra gas with me.

Yesterday, I looked down and my trip odometer was reading 105 miles. I always reset it to zero when I fill up. Well I thought maybe I'd left it on reserve but I hadn't. Usually I have to turn the valve way before 105 miles. A few days before the last fill up I changed my air cleaner and just doing that gave me 105 miles on only 2.46 gallons. I guess that made a big difference.
