KZ750 E2 Opinion please~!

Alright so here's the deal... I own a KZ400 as some of you may know and love it.

Since the bike addiction is super contagious I am now helping one of my buddies find a bike.

Today I stumbled across a ad for a 1981 KZ750 E2 for $450. Running but needs some work.

Couple questions...

1) If it's titled, is this bike worth $450?

2) How user friendly is the bike, specifically the engine? As a first time builder I was glad I only had to worry about a 2 cyl not a 4... but that's just me.

3) How awesome is this bike? Fast? Fun to ride?

Thanks! All input appreciated.

Here's the CL ad.

Holy moses. There is a lot of work to do on that thing!

If it runs, and isn't making any crazy sounds, then I guess it may be worth 450, but it would also have to roll etc.

I bet he'd take less, except it is now the seller's time (spring being around the corner).

That 750 will get up and go, if the carbs are decent and the rubber diaphragms aren't torn.

I would say, if you're looking for something to get on quick and ride for the summer - then look elsewhere *UNLESS you have wads of cash to buy lots of parts right now, and upgrade the thing to a nice safe rider, quickly.

If it is a resto project/not in a rush, then by all means go for it. Its a nice bike with lots of pep, and is fairly easy to maintain/repair and operate.

If your friend can make it run as well at it did when new he will love it. They were very nice bikes. Take a look at the specs and 1981 road test:

I called the guy... it does run and it is titled.

Carbs need cleaned but that is to be expected.

He said the cam chain is a little sloppy but there is a aftermarket chain tensioner that you can buy to fix that??

I called him at 11 and he had already had 2 other calls today and one guy was going to look at it. If it's still there tomorrow we may go take a look.

buy a compression tester and bring it with you. easy to test compression. If you buy it expect it to cost. 8 years ago I paid $1000 for mine which was in very good shape but still needed another $700 for tires and a new chain and a few little things to make it street legal.

How many miles on it ? Regarding cam chain either the tensioner is shot - easy fix using a with a replacement from APE or the chain is quite stretched. If quite stretched and low mileage then perhaps not a good sign.

I have a 1980 E1 4 cylinder and love it. In its day it was the fastest 750 on the road....but remember that day was 30 years ago :)

Easy to maintain. Carbs will need a very very very thorough cleaning.

Yes. It's fast for a bike 30+ years old.
It will be much faster then your KZ400 for sure.
