Barn find (literally), need advice please

So i went on a ride from Vancouver BC to Saskatoon Saskatchewan in July on my kz900. Stopped in the middle of nowhere Montana for gas. The guy knew a guy who might have a kz900 for sale so I give him my ph# to pass along. A few weeks later I get a call from the guy with the bike. It's a one owner 77 kz1000 ser # kzT00A-005231, 32k miles.

I believe him that there is nothing wrong with it other than cosmetic stuff. He sent me a few bad photos. It is complete, and stock, including original mufflers. It is missing one mirror, the clear on the tank is peeling badly, the seat needs replacement (it is that ugly king queen type) as it is badly cracked, and the rear shocks (they appear to be Konis) are quite rusted. There is a "Shadow Royale" fairing on it so the head light bucket and signals are missing. It will need tires for sure, and maybe a chain.

The bike is on a farm 50 miles from nowhere.

I know there was a post recently about the value of 77 kz1000s. The guy wants $2000 for it. Given the above info, what do you guys think.

thats a bit high IMO. You don't know if it needs anything else, if it has had proper maintenance. At 32,000 miles it may need a good top end refresher.

Sounds a little much to me. Does it have a clear title? If it runs you could probably justify the price with a clean title, but it will take quite a few hundred dollars to bring her up to par. My 2 cents

Yes the title is clear. He does understand that I won't be able to give him market value. I have to drive to Montana with my truck to pick it up. $400 in gas and then I'll have to store it for a while until I can import it. I figure $900-$1000 to make it really nice.

seems like too much...one mans too much is another mans deal...but i vote with the others...after all the hurdles you listed and the distance and the work and the gas and the price...i would let it of the hook....

if it was rare or a trick bike,,that would change everything,,,really nice bikes turn up for 500-1500 once in awhile for sure...

Thanks for all your input. Unless I can get a really good price out of him, I think I'll give it a pass. I'm looking for something that is collector plate eligible while I redo my kz900. I was hoping this 1000 might be the one. Though it would be nice to save another one of these old bikes from the chop/cut crowd.

I paid $1600 for my 77 1000 with 12K on the clock and it was in really good condition. I live about 30 minutes from Montana so it's not a regional price thing. he is wanting waaaaay too much for it. He would be lucky to get around $800 for it. But he lives in montana so he's probably drunk.
